Chimney Rock, located in the Chimney Rock State Park, is the 535-million-year-old monolith for which the Park is named, and is considered one of the most iconic sites in North Carolina. From its top, you’ll soak in the 75-mile panoramic views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. For the adventure-seekers, you can hike to the top of this towering 315-foot rock formation via the Outcroppings trail. If you are looking for a less intense journey, there is a state-of-the-art elevator that is also available to get you closer to the top of the Chimney, which leaves just 44-steps to get up to the breathtaking view. At an elevation of 2,280 feet above sea level, this mountaintop experience will take your breath away. The climb is well worth the effort.
The Exclamation Point Trail provides access to some of the best views and most well-known geological formations in the Park. The trail begins directly across from the stairs that lead to the Chimney and traverses through the unique cliff-side habitat. This 20-minute, the moderate-to-strenuous hike is mostly uphill and climbs approximately 150 vertical feet. The trail uses a combination of stairs and switchbacks that lead to popular points of interest such as the Opera Box, Devil’s Head, and Exclamation Point. The park has hikes that vary from easy to moderate-strenuous.
